Teenage is like a rollercoaster ride. Balancing your studies and social life, your new-found freedom, dates, career, and gushing hormones… Too much to handle, right? And then comes another problem – skin care.

Just like skin care in adult life, skin care in teenage life, too, has its own ups and downs, along with the usual positive and negative aspects that come along with it. If you have acne prone skin, blemish prone skin, dry skin or even pigmentation issues, it will be pretty difficult to manage the problem. And that's if you have a reasonably good skin care routine for the face. However, if you do not have good skin care routine for your face, it could become very difficult to deal with the problem.

In this article, I will give you 15 crucial tips for teenagers that can help you maintain a healthy skin care routine for your face, along with maintaining a healthy skin, so that you do not suffer from skin problems in your teenage years. Let's go through them.

1. Moisturise:

The first thing to remember is to keep your skin moisturised. Apply a face pack only on the face which gets drier due to prolonged sun exposure or frequent exposure to hot water. And a good moisturising lotion, by itself, is not enough to get your skin hydrated. Apart from that, another skin care routine to look into is sleeping well. Make sure you have a good night's sleep and don't let your skin get dehydrated by skipping it even for just a day or two.

2. Exfoliate:

Before applying a face pack, exfoliate your skin. This will allow your skin to get rid of the dead skin cells on your face and its surface that clog up the pores and cause redness.

3. Sun protection:

Even if you do not burn easily, which most people do not, you should still apply sunscreen on your face to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Apply a sunscreen that matches your skin colour and does not leave an annoying white cast on your face.

4. Self tanning:

Unlike young girls who keep tanning during their weekends, it is recommended that you do not touch the face with the wrong hand to apply self tanner as it could be damaging to your skin. Self tanner is great, if you get the application right.

5. Use products wisely:

When you get a product from a beauty store, most of them have a little sticker on them which helps you identify which products are moisturisers, serums, toners, masks etc. Make sure that you understand the difference between these products before you buy them. Don't buy the wrong one or even try it before reading the label. And make sure that you use a gentle cleanser and a facial wash to clean your face after every use of any of the products.

6. Opt for sunscreen:

You should also opt for sunscreen, and not just a moisturiser. If your skin is acne prone, use a sunscreen that is ultra thin, in order to get the best protection. Sunscreen that comes with SPF 100+ protects your skin from UV rays by blocking up to 98% of them, while the regular sunscreen block half of them.

7. Invest in a good makeup regime:

Buying makeup can be a very confusing task. Invest in a good makeup regime. Good makeup consists of primer, a tinted moisturiser, an illuminating primer and a foundation. A good, comfortable foundation also minimises the amount of foundation that you need to apply and comes in different shades that will match your skin tone and provide enough coverage. The right foundation makes your face appear light and bright.

8. Regular exfoliation:

You should do regular exfoliation of your skin to remove the dead skin cells from your face. Wash your face with gentle cleanser twice or thrice a day, preferably before sleeping. Exfoliation is not only necessary if you have acne prone skin, but you need to do it if you want to maintain a healthy skin. Do not use chemical exfoliants as it can damage your skin.

9. Steer clear of harsh facial washes:

If your skin gets irritated while washing it with harsh chemical washes, switch to a mild, gentle cleanser instead. You can also make your own facial cleanser at home with ingredients like lemon juice, honey, apple cider vinegar, onion juice etc.

10. Exfoliate at least twice a week:

Yes, you need to exfoliate your face to get rid of dead skin cells and keep it clean. You can either do it at home with plain white soap or if you are interested in doing the same professionally, you can use facemasks which are really gentle and can leave your face fresh and glowing.
